Collection Care & Public Art Reviews—University Collection Survey
university art collection survey
Arizona State University
RLA performed a university campus art collection survey for Arizona State University (ASU) in March 2014. We were selected from a large group of applicants to develop a comprehensive maintenance, preservation, and conservation program for a group of 23 medium to monumental sculptures and murals in bronze, stone, painted steel, concrete, ceramic, weathering steel (Cor-ten), stainless steel, fiberglass, glass, galvanized steel, plaster, and oil on canvas. RLA is considered a leader in university campus art collection surveys, having performed similar ones for Florida International University, University of Miami, and California State University at Long Beach, as well as ASU. Our surveys for college campus art collections consider the didactic possibilities of this work. During the ASU campus collection survey, we engaged students and allowed for their participation as a means of encouraging knowledge about conservation in the core curriculum of a college art program.
Based on the work we performed at this site, the university was able to undertake an extensive campus art collection conservation program beginning in 2016.
