Conservation Treatment
Obstinate Lighthouse, South Pointe Park, Miami Beach, Florida
In 2023, RLA provided a conservation treatment of Tobias Rehberger’s Obstinate Lighthouse, located at Miami Beach’s South Pointe Park. This process involved a full repaint of all 26 colors via HVLP process, all done by RLA staff.
Achieving such a specific color scheme required careful coordination with the City of Miami Beach, the artist’s studio and RLA’s conservators to obtain the appropriate coatings in the correct colors, then properly sequence them to achieve the artist’s desired appearance. The extant coating still exhibited good adhesion throughout the majority of surfaces, so all surfaces were prepared, primed and painted in the appropriate color, including specific fluorescent colors. Prior to repainting, all surfaces were cleaned, and any areas of corrosion were treated. Given the large height (55’) of the artwork, permitted scaffolding was engineered to provide access to all of the artwork surfaces while taking into account the Miami Beach’s oceanfront wind loads.
