Torch of Learning with Book and Plaque
This installation of three independent, high-relief sculptural elements set into a concrete stand consists of a torch of learning, an open book with Hebrew and English writing, and a dedication plaque. Each of these elements is made of cast and/or fabricated bronze patinated to achieve different colors. Select areas on the torch (the flame) and plaque (the letters only) have a high-polished finish. The remaining surfaces vary from dark brown-black to light warm golden brown.
RLA was hired because of severe surface alteration from coating failure and exposure to a marine environment. The pieces were covered with lacquer that had not been properly maintained, leading to overall failure of the finish. Complete removal of the lacquer was followed by polishing, cleaning, removal of all surface particulates and corrosion, and select lacquering and waxing of elements.
