Monument Conservation—Outdoor Public Art
historic brick structure repair
Ann Norton Sculpture Garden, West Palm Beach, FL
Created by 20th century artist Ann Weaver Norton and situated at her residence and studio, now a West Palm Beach museum, these large-scale masonry sculptures exhibited grime, salt efflorescence, biological growths, and cracking of joints when RLA was brought in for assessment. Conservation was performed on 9 works over the course of two years. Structural repairs involved removal of corroded metal pins, partial repointing, and filling losses with conservation grade mortars. Surface biological growths were cleaned and salt efflorescence from proximity to the Atlantic Ocean was poulticed. RLA provided a maintenance plan to the owners that is implemented annually.
